I hate Hootie & the Blowfish. That said, my understanding is those guys
worked their asses off on the road and were ignored by the majors for years
until they sold so much merchandise they had to pay attention. It may be
crap, but it's crap that people actually chose as opposed to the man, so I
say go Hootie.

I've always liked the first album, and I think they were (wittingly or
unwittingly) dumped into the jock-rock/yuppie music with that damned Dan
Marino video. That, I think, was when the backlash really started.
That said, a couple years ago Mark Bryan, the band's lead guitar player, put
out a fine album of power-pop produced by Don Dixon that counted Peter
Holsapple among the backing musicians.
And, of course, Peter was Hootie's touring utility player for its first two
tours. I don't think he would have signed on if he hadn't considered them
worthwhile.
