hi all:

back from a delightful evening with David Mead at the
intimate and not *ALWAYS* irritatingly chatty schuba's
last night - DM is on this tour sans band or backup,
just him and his guitar. The good news: he says his
third is recorded and awaiting release. The bad news:
the record company, he said, "liked it well enough to
record it, but, apparently, not well enough to release
it."

Sound familiar? Christ in the early morning, here we
go again.

He said from the stage he would be seeking alternate
methods of distribution himself, and when I asked him
if he was going to have to buy back the masters he
looked puzzled and said no, he thinks they're going to
just give them to him. In light of our recent
conversation about Owsley, I somehow find that hard to
believe. Anyone know of RCA doing this for other
people?

In any event, codeine-laced cold medicine
notwithstanding, DM turned in a sweet and good-natured
performance for this first show of 2 weeks on the
road, flubbing the words to the kickoff Robert
Bradley's Postcard, stopping, chatting a bit, and then
resuming where he left off; climbing effortlessly into
his higher registers, just when it seemed like he was
surely running out of range (and this man had a cold?
lands sake!); playing 3 or 4 new songs that i'll be
eager to get my hands on - assuming I ever can. Can i
just say that it is a pleasure to watch/hear someone
1) so at ease in front of a crowd, no matter what he
said about first night jitters, and 2) with a voice i
think among the most unaffected, beautiful, and pure
ever to be found outside the vienna boys choir. I
think he even shut up the yakkers in back when he held
the final note of "breathe you in"....cripes.

here's the link to his site and tour schedule - go and
see him and buy a shirt, and get him the $$ he needs
to unleash his new one. Make it so!
