I always thought the Hootie boys got a bad rap too.
I've always liked the first album, and I think they were (wittingly or
unwittingly) dumped into the jock-rock/yuppie music with that damned Dan
Marino video. That, I think, was when the backlash really started.
That said, a couple years ago Mark Bryan, the band's lead guitar player, put
out a fine album of power-pop produced by Don Dixon that counted Peter
Holsapple among the backing musicians.
And, of course, Peter was Hootie's touring utility player for its first two
tours. I don't think he would have signed on if he hadn't considered them
worthwhile.
