i just wish he'd stop singing like dave matthews. it
confuses me.

Coincidentally, though not exactly relevantly, I was
reading one of those nasty little paperback
aimed-at-15-year-olds biopics about pop stars, this
one from 1976 about John Denver (don't ask...I had
this time to kill, see, and, well, it was there....)
Oddly, they reprinted a large chunk of Lester Bangs'
assessment of JD, which as you can imagine was
inflamatory, derisive, and ultimately dismissive of
his blandifying of the "nature" culture and his
twinkly talk-show-biz tv persona, but the JD's
response to that was something like, "well, but
someone has to fill the gap - i mean, Mr. and Mrs.
MiddleAmerica MIGHT invite James Taylor into their
house for dinner, but I don't think so." Like *James
Taylor* was the warped satan worshipping crazed drug
fiend rockstar who embodied the anti-Denver, fer cryin
out loud. Funny how one's perspectives change after
25 years of hearing "Fire and Rain" on lite-rock
stations.

just struck me as funny. can't wait until this
evening when i have my DAVID MEAD show to get to...and
by the by, i wrote a huge long blather about my
transcendental experience at the Paul Weller show last
week, which i subsequently lost somehow, but i'll
encapsulate thusly:

squeal! rapture. amazing technique. eeee! didja know
he was only 18 when the jam started? sigh. kickass
drummer steve white, kickin' ass as usual. played
"town called malice" and "that's entertainment," and
style council's "man of great promise." squeal!
f&^cking ripping version of "sunflower," beautifully
soulful version of M. Gaye's "What's going on."
Tragically, no "walk on gilded splinters," no "amongst
butterflies," and no second encore. Come back soon,
Paul! eee!
