Wow, that was a pretty good article. Very well thought out. I like that the
author mentions that it is still possible to do some loudness enhancing that
doesn't entirely ruin the signal. IE...a true audiophile might suggest that
"peak normalization" is all that should ever been done, but he is realistic
in saying, hey, you can increase the signal -and- not overly affect the
dynamics.

When I make mix CDs that combine recent and old tracks, majors and indies, I
can count on having to adjustments. 1/3 or normally just about right, 1/3
are two loud, and 1/3 are too soft. So I dial down some tracks by 2-3db or
so, while at the same time doing some loudness increases to others (again
typically only 2-3db, although sometimes I'll find a CD sourced material
that has peaks of -4db or lower, and have to do a bit more. I don't mind
doing tasteful loudness adjustments (using Steinberg Loudness Maximizer),
but it really annoys me to when I have to dial down the volume of some
tracks to bring them in line, because I know that I can't get the dynamics
back that some mastering engineer stripped from the track when they first
put it on CD.
