I'd annoint Patti LaBelle the archetype. Once she became "LaBelle",
it was all over but the crying (mine).
Interestingly, no matter how adventuresome Aretha Franklin got, I
don't think she ever became histrionic, bombastic or gymnastic.
And I felt Aretha Franklin's outfit was wonderful. She's as big
as a house and not one bit afraid to strut every last ounce.
