TOWNSHEND CONSOLES VEDDER

Who guitarist Pete Townshend has contacted Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder
to discuss the 'horrific experience' he witnessed at the Roskilde festival
last week.

Townshend's advice to Vedder comes from personal experience, after eleven
fans of The Who were killed in a scrum before a show in 1979 in Cincinnati.

Speaking on his personal website, Townshend said he had spoken to Vedder
following the deaths of nine fans at the Danish festival last Friday, while
Pearl Jam played.

He said: 'I spoke yesterday to Eddie Vedder. I don't want to say anymore
than that. I passed on what I knew The Who had done wrong after the
Cincinnatti disaster – in a nutshell.

'I think we left too soon and I spoke too angrily to the press and without
proper consideration of the fact that the people who deserved respect were
the dead and their families,' explained Townshend.

The Who tragedy occurred before the band had even arrived on-stage, when the
eleven were suffocated or trampled to death as they rushed to get seats at
Ohio's Riverfront Coliseum.

Townshend concluded: 'Luckily Pearl Jam and their management have stayed in
Denmark and cancelled subsequent shows. Other bands also marked some
respecting by refusing to play.'
