Something similar happened with Robyn Hitchcock and A&M. He recorded "Eye"
while under contract, but A&M didn't like it (surprisingly...there are a lot
of good tracks on that album) and didn't release it. It was issued in the
states through Twin Tone. Not sure what the terms of the deal were, whether
A&M licensed it to TwinTone or they said Robyn was free to find alternate
way of releasing it.
