All of the Shins were in Flake. The only difference is that in Flake, Neal
played lead guitar and Marty played bass, and in the Shins, Neal plays bass
and Marty plays keyboards.

If you see it and it's cheap, sure. But don't expect any of the old Flake
releases (there's a CD, a 10" EP and several singles) to sound like the
Shins: same guys, but a much different sound, and unfortunately, it's a
sound that they never pulled off in the studio. I was lucky enough to be
around during Flake's heyday as the kings of the Albuquerque music scene,
when they were the greatest live band in town. But their records sound
thin, far too lo-fi, and simply unsatisfying. It's tough to hear a song
like "Deluca" (my favorite Flake song aside from the one with my name in
the chorus) on its sole vinyl release -- a split single with Henry's Dress,
the precursors of the Aislers Set -- because it sounds just okay on vinyl,
when live it was an absolute wall-blaster. Live, Flake sounded like the
best parts of Television and Mission of Burma. The records never got that.
