It happened where I grew up, too, right down the street from several sets of
relatives. I bought a ton of used CDs in a shop directly across the street
from the place.

The whole story is pretty whacked, if you ask me. First of all, the club is
owned by well-known TV reporter Jeff Derdarian, who was on channel 7 in
Boston until about two weeks ago when he went to channel 12 in Providence. He
was at the club that night doing a story for channel 12 on club safety (a
follow-up on the Chicago stampede) and caught the whole thing on tape.
Apparently Great White didn't have permission for the pyrotechnics, but no
one really seems to know for sure right now. One member of Great White and a
well-known local DJ from (I believe) WHJY are amongst those still unaccounted
for.

I thought the most repulsive thing, though, was one of the "grief counselors"
that channel 7 interviewed this morning. He was clearly a faith-based grief
counselor, which was fine, but he made some comments that were incredibly
tactless. First he went so far as to say "You know, I don't mean to sound
crass but when you put a lot of people, loud music, and alcohol in one place
late at night, these kinds of things happen." He then went FURTHER to say
that people really need to "turn to the scriptures" and that "the reason
these people were out in the first place, listening to loud rock music and
drinking, was because of emptiness in their lives that could be rectified by
God." CREEPY stuff, and this was all over the TV this morning. I just thought
it was really poor timing for someone to prosletyze like that.. I mean, he's
supposed to be a grief counselor. Who is he helping?
