Hey, I agree with all your points; heck, I'm a home recordist/DIY-er myself 
and have great admiration for doing it cheaply and for folks like R. Stevie 
Moore, but when I hear the term "mass consumption", that is usually applied 
to a product that is consumed by everyone, like soda pop or Brittney 
Spears.  God bless the exceptions to the rule like the Brendan Bensons of 
the world with inexpensively-made records making welcome blips on the radar 
of public consciousness, or at least the consciousness of readers of Mojo 
magazine.  But mass consumption implies just that, hundreds of thousands to 
millions consuming the product.  Most of us who make music and most of the 
guitar bands discussed on this list are not consumed on such a large 
scale.  It's niche production and consumption, if you will.  My mp3 may be 
available worldwide, but getting "eyeballs" to my site is another story.
