Wouldn't it be great if they toured together....
Anyway -- the new Buzzcocks disc is growing on me. Pete Shelley's songs are
kind of inconsistent -- made this is why he digs out the best song off the
Shelleydevoto disc and the Devoto era "Lester Sands", along with
resurrecting the "Fast Cars"/"Shot By Both Sides" lead guitar part for
another tune. But Steve Diggle has his best songwriting since TRADE TEST
TRANSMISSIONS.
For the past two weeks, I've been throwing on the Isley Brothers box set in
morning before work. I just finished the second disc. Great stuff. I was
particularly struck yesterday with their incredible take on "Hello It's Me",
which is done like The Nazz arrangement, rather than the Todd Rundgren
version. This one outdoes both with its ultrasoulfulness.
I remember the first time I heard the original Nazz "Hello" -- I initially
disliked it, have heard Todd's so often. Now I dig it so much. Anyone else
have that experience -- initially disliking the original after you had been
exposed to the cover version, but coming around to like the original as much
or more?
