Andrew,
I hear what you are saying, but there are exceptions. I think Michael
Carpenter's point was a good one that I completely agree with. The bottom
line, you don't need these major label budgets to record music that sounds
as if it were recorded as such. I can sight countless examples of records,
many of which are made by musicians that reside on Audities, that don't
sound lacking in any way/shape/form from what a 'major label' recording
does. While I would agree that there are numerous "zero budget" indy
recordings that sound like they were recorded with limited resources, I
don't think it's fair to say that you need to spend Weezer money to sound
like a Weezer recording. While we're on the subject, I just have to say that
KCB's home recordings are "zero budget" for the most part and amazing in
quality due to his diligence in time consumed recording/producing them. I
really can't see anyone hearing his recordings and sighting any
short-comings, even in comparison to a major label "radio-ready" recording,
tho I do completely understand the technical differences. I only sighted KCB
here as it was in reference to his original post. Again, I feel there are
countless other artists who record their own stuff and don't lack any sheen
or professionalism.
Ken
