I think the numbers were about the same, though I think NSync still holds the
title for greatest one-week sales. The 50 Cent distinction is "best first
week sales of a DEBUT album" or something, which is a dubious claim since he
does have another album out already (they've hidden behind the half-truth
that it's a compilation).
I stand by my statement that it's astonishingly awful. Unlike many on this
list, I *like* hip-hop and think that this past year produced some good
hip-hop albums (with N.E.R.D., Jurassic 5, The Streets, and Blackalicious all
leading the pack). That's why it's so sad that 50 Cent just recycles all the
gangsta cliches without Dr. Dre's attitude or Eminem's sense of humor... it's
just aggression and little else.

Well you're right. Thanks for that link, actually, I've always wondered if
there was a place to check that. To be honest, I'm sort of surprised that the
Vines out-sold the Hives. At least around here the Hives got tons of more
airplay and seemed to battle less of a PR problem.
Does anyone know, though, if the fact that the Hives jumped from indie
Burning Heart to a major (I'm not sure who) hurt their RIAA sales? Like,
because the song was already well up the charts when the Burning Heart album
was all that was available, and THEN it was picked up by a major and
reissued... did splitting the sales between what were technically two
*separate* releases mean that, on paper, they sold less? I'm often curious
about this, especially since it's happening a lot nowadays (Clinic and Hot
Hot Heat being two other recent examples). Let the indie build them the buzz
and then the major jumps in to give them the big promotion/distribution.
