Hi,
In the past year there was so much bad news reported on this list, and now the
Eb-ola virus has hit, so I wanted to add some good news.
Today is Lou Christie's sixtieth birthday. He celebrated by giving what he
called a "shebang" at the Bottom Line club last night.
Lasting on this planet for sixty years, and as an entertainer for more than
forty, is a small accomplishment. But keeping one's skills into one's seventh
decade, now that's worth celebrating. I can testify that Lou sounds as good
today as when he recorded "The Gypsy Cried" over forty years ago. I think that
many of the auditeers are familiar with great songs like "Lightnin' Strikes"
with Lou's clear voice reaching the stratosphere.
At the shebang, Lou sang "Lightnin' Strikes" with all the other hits. He gave a
Las Vegas-type show stopping to sing "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me", "Never My
Love", "Mack the Knife" and other classic oldies. He punctuated the songs with
rhythmic movements and told stories, including how "Rhapsody in the Rain" was
banned for its lyrical content even though now it sounds as dirty as a nursery
rhyme. He was on a first name basis with some of the fans in the audience. Lou
worked so hard that these fans handed him napkins to wipe the sweat from his
face and glasses of water. Many birthday presents were also prepared by these
adoring fans, who braved Monday's twenty-inch snowstorm to make the show.
In respect to the recent thread on audities, when I call "Lightnin' Strikes"
a "great" song, I stress I'm not being hyperbolic. It reached number one and
sold several million copies.
Take care,
Sherman
