I can magically tie the two together. :-)
Back in Napster's heyday (tangentially, thanks to all who recommended
other file-sharing apps... I still couldn't find 95% of what I was
looking for though) my music budget went almost exclusively to new CDs.
I'd find something I liked online, download five or six tracks, and get
an excellent idea of whether the album would be a keeper or not. I
don't think I bought one CD that whole time that I didn't totally love.
Between not really being able to preview music in any useful way and
quite a few artists who would have qualified as automatic buys in the
past boring me to tears with their recent releases, I've become
extremely gunshy about paying retail for new releases. I now buy almost
everything used - or wait for one of those insane sales at BMG and
stock up. In fact, almost the only time I do buy new is when I've
traded in a stack of the last disappointments for credit. Which I'm
doing tomorrow - let's see, looks like about 30 of 'em since last
summer. Sad.
I'm also a little cranky about buying new releases because twice in the
last 3 months, I've tried to rip MP3s from 2002 Warners releases to
iTunes on my desktop computer, and both times the hard drive has
completely crashed. I've never had any problems with the computer other
than that - not even minor ones. The first time, I thought it might be
a coincidence; now I'm not so sure. This does not really make me
inclined to purchase more of their product - and besides, all those
repair bills have to come out of the music budget! Dammit!
