The last tour (the Go Kart package w/Lunachicks and someone else who escapes
me) was the first go round for this Mach II version of Buzzcocks where
everything came together -- they'll never be as good as the classic line up,
but the band really came into its own.

Yet my reaction to this album is a lot different than Michael's. The album
is the most ferocious of the 'cocks career, with bassist Tony Barber's
production often letting things almost ride into the red. But the songs,
for the most part, are woefully undernourished. Particularly Shelley's
material -- this may be why they drag out "Lester Sands" and "Stars" (from
last year's Shelleydevoto project). Many familiar moves are intact, but the
killer hooks aren't there. For my money, the Buzzcocks are batting .500
since reformation. TRADE TEST TRANSMISSIONS was a terriffic comeback, ALL
SET was a poorly produced snooze, and MODERN was a low key charmer. Maybe a
few more spins will change my mind...
