I was about to say basically the same thing, Robert, but held back because I
also don't know anything about the legal end of this picture.
Owsley's predicament aside, it seems that the majority of those power
poppers who traverse into "major label land" find the same dead end street.
In a niche' market like we have here, I'm amazed that more artist don't just
go it alone/don't take matters into their own hands and make/distribute
CD-rs/Cd's on their own. Again, maybe I'm missing something/making this too
simple, but surely someone like Owsley (whose CD's are easily found the used
bins, often in the form of "promo" copies) could make at least a little cash
selling direct to his loyal legion of fans instead of being tied up/left in
the corner to rot by corporate policy...etc.??
What am I missing here? Wouldn't an artist like this/in a small niche'
market/small fan base like this have a better chance making CD's/selling
direct via a website to his fans rather than letting someone else steer the
boat? (i, e. tie it up in the harbor and forget about it)
I don't see much, if any support coming to these artists from the "labels"
(big or small). The *big* labels forget 'em...and the small labels don't
seem to be able to haul in enough sales to support them in the capacity that
it takes to spread the word about their music.
so again, just what *is* the point in signing on the dotted line anyway?
Wouldn't an artist make as much/more $$ selling 5K copies direct to his fans
rather than having 20K copies of his music end up as promo throaways in the
used bins?
no offense meant to anyone who owns a label, BTW.
