Ted Leo used to be in a mod rock band called Chisel. I saw Chisel open for
Velocity Girl once and they were cool, yet I've never gotten around to
getting a CD. Someday.
Ted Leo/Pharmacists have three discs out -- the first is experimental music,
not recommended. The 2001 release THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE was one of my
favorite records of that year. The band hadn't quite gelled,
membershipwise, but you couldn't tell from this consistent batch of tunes.
Leo's music is full of twists and turns and reference points are all over
the place -- early Elvis Costello (who is mentioned a lot), The Feelies, The
Woodentops, folk rock, The Jam, Thin Lizzy and many others. He is also one
of the best lyricists on the planet.
The new LP is HEARTS OF OAK -- he now has a defined band (and the drummer is
extremely large, y'know?). I'm digging it -- it isn't a copy of the last
disc, but builds in different directions on some tracks. Both albums are
growers. Not sure if this will rate as high for me as the last one -- then
again, it could end up rating higher.
