Songs I did not own:

Indian Reservation - The Raiders: When I was about 6, I had a crush on
this girl Jill, and her sister (Stacey?) had this single. I remember she
had a record player which we set up on her driveway and listened to
singles.

Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing - Stevie Wonder: Another of Jill's
sister's records.

Coconut - Nilsson: Also around age 6, I remember being in the back seat
of a car with my mom and my aunt, and this song was on the radio. I
remember being scared by it to this day.

Venus - Shocking Blue: Same car trip with my mom and aunt. My aunt
didn't know the song too well -- somewhere in the middle, she blurted
out: "Did they say 'I'm your PENIS?'".

Lightfoot - The Guess Who: I can remember this song from very early, but
I have no idea how I heard it. Neither of my parents had any Guess Who
singles or albums, the single is not in my collection, and I had no older
siblings. In fact, I didn't even know the artist or title until I asked
on this list. All I had was the general chord structure of the chorus
and the words "He is an artist". Perhaps one of my grade school teachers
played it for us. (I remember listening to Mark Lindsay's "Arizona" at
Wilson School, as well as "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "16 Tons".)
Weird.

Songs I owned:

I Wanna Hold Your Hand - The very beginning of my favorite record, age 2.

Where Do I Go? - The Hair soundtrack may be really cheesy from a hippy
perspective, but there's some great pop there. I still haven't figured
out how it was ok with my mom for us to be listening to songs with lines
like "Masturbation can be fun / join the holy orgy kama sutra everyone"
(or something like that) at age 5, but I glad it was.

April Come She Will - S&G - still gives me chills.

Windy - I think the Association record was my dad's.

For #5, let me just mention all of the Disney (Jungle Book!), Sesame
Street, Mr. Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, Danny Kaye and other kids' records
I had. And Free to Be You and Me, of course.
