Aw shucks, Bill. The column is now Mix CD-R of the Month. I don't actually
discuss art, unless someone sends me their CD art and we can link to the
jpeg. I've been making a mix a month pretty much since I graduated from law
school, and the column features my mix and seeks submissions of groovy track
listings. For the past six months, an Audities lurker named Cynthia (who
posted the list of eligible records for the last poll) has submitted track
lists for a running series of pure power pop mixes.

Her mixes are fine examples of staying within a genre. I tend to bounce
around quite a bit -- mix CD-Rs are my substitute for no longer having a
college radio show. I have a bit of a template -- I always start with a new
release song (w/in last 12 mos.) and every third song thereafter is a
current song. I try to vary the eras, so each disc has at least two or
three tracks from the '60s, '70s and '80s. I try to mix up styles and
tempos, so the disc has an ebb and flow, though how that transpires varies
from disc to disc. Sometimes things build from mellow to rocking or
vice-versa. Yet other times, nothing is more effective than going from a
quiet Hank Williams tune into a banging punk track. Though not planned in
advance, I particularly like tracks that start one way and end another, as
they are great bridges to shift the mood.
