Another California album from the same year (1988) that's full of sheen is the lone disc by The Buddy System, featuring Buddy Judge. Very slick, but very Rubinoo-esque power pop. Interestingly, Falkner and Judge became 1/2 of The Grays, whose 1994 album was anything but slick.

these guys were supposed to be huge, sorta.......here in Boston, the hype machine got geared up for the System, and I remember seeing them many times, even being in a band that opened for them once upon a time............I remember "Go Back To Hollywood" got a lot of airplay, but then, as now, Boston does not seem have a heart for pop bands........
i think they were too 'polished' or 'pop' for Boston radio at the time, and with not much success, hence the move to LA........
