Funnily enough, in my day job here... i just found out today that the majors
are experimenting with cassettes and vinyl to get advance promo
copies of new albums
out to media and retailers and to thwart leaks of new music.
As head of production, I had to scramble today to find cassette samples
as we haven't made one in about 6 years now... and a lot of the big
facilities have shut down their
cassette machinery or sold it off to the smaller regional tape/cd plants.
Anyone out there in media or retail have any thoughts on this? I'm
curious now if this works at all...
Apparently the hip hop guys were the first to experiment with
cassette advances...
this could be a VERY interesting turn of events, especially for
vinyl.... I know that at the Virgin
store here in Vancouver, there's a whole FLOOR of vinyl and the big
indie, ZULU, has a whole giant
ROOM of it (in the span of about 6 years, their vinyl went from a
ROOM to a couple of bins back to
a ROOM with new vinyl the lion's share)...
