Both polls are representative of the groups of people asked to vote -
relatively closed lists of people who share at least some musical tastes in
common. (in the case of the CoF, a VERY small group). Take a poll of
Kerrang! readers and Queens Of The Stone Age would have fared a lot better.
Pazz & Jop by its nature will be more across the board and feature more hip
hop, rap and mainstream sludge because many of the voters/critics wallow in
those pools. So what? You're not going to find Eminem atop an Audities poll
for because many of the voters don't care for that type of music, period,
and people who are looking to wallow in rap conversation aren't hanging
around here. Doesn't mean Eminem's record won't go down as one of the
biggest records of 2002 in the bigger universe.
I don't get upset that many of my favorites don't show up on consensus
rankings, nor do I think that any poll (P&J included) means diddly-shit
except prodding me to check out things I haven't heard or have resisted
hearing. I already know what the ten best records of 2002 were in my corner
of the planet, at least as of the date I compiled my list. Hopefully someone
reads my list somewhere and decides to check out the Diamond Dogs or some
post-Geils stoner gives Peter Wolf another chance.
