Newberrys was/is owned by McCrorys, the same chain that owns Kress,
McLellans, Ben Franklin and (as of 1986) TG&Y. Their MO is to buy failing
variety store chains, turn their merchandise mix into something maybe half
a step above a dollar store and then run them into the ground through
corporate incompetence until they're forced to close.
Stewart, whose dad worked for TG&Y and is still bitter about how they
ruined a great chain
