Two Guys was originally called Two Guys from Harrison, I think referring to
Harrison, PA or Harrison, NJ. Korvettes was originally called E. J.
Korvettes and the name stood for Eight Jewish Korean Veterans who planned
the approach while stuck in foxholes in the far East during war. There was
also a chain in the NY area called FMC - the one I went to regularly was on
Route 10 in Morris Plains, NJ. It stood for Farmers Market Coop, but had
nothing to do with food. They had a dreadful barber that gave me my annual
summer crew cut, the obligatory pet department that sold those tiny turtles
whose shells turned to mush within a week and died, a toy department that
had the greatest Lionel train parts selection I have ever seen outside of
Lionel headquarters in Manhattan, and a cheesy record area that actually
seemed to have someone with taste working there. The LPs were all the
latest hits, but the 45s included some absurdities. My favorite store was
a little Mom & Pop Drug store in Denville, NJ, that had a single rack of
LPs, all cut outs, all $3 or less. Small selection, HUGE quality. No idea
why they had such good taste, but I bought both Sagittarius albums there,
Curt Boettcher solo LP, mono copies of Friends, Pet Sounds, and Wild Honey
(and they had no duophonic copies), Begin by The Millennium, and even a
copy of The Many Moods of Murray Wilson. I think they had about 100
different titles and at least 50 of them are among my favorite obscure
greatest records. They had *no* hits - no Beatles, no Grand Funk,
nada. Just this weird collection of California psychedelia-surf stuff that
was gathering dust way in the back.
