In terms of artists that shaped my early music listening and collecting:

Paul McCartney - The first artist I remember that sense of "His record's are
the best, and I'm a huge fan and must get his new records as soon as they
come out" abot. Lots of arguments with my friends who were Elton fans!

Yes - The first "FM" type of band I really liked, gave me a sense of stuff
that was "album" music as opposed to "singles", plus they could really play
those instruments.

Deep Purple - I remember seeing the stacks of amps on "Made In Japan", and
being really impressed by the loud aggressive music, big riffs, and attitude.
(And Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solos.) Launched my love of loud music, both
hard rock and, later, punk.

ELO - My first remembrance of an act that had catchy songs, but was strangely
different. Heck, they had cellos!

Jam or Iron Maiden - Launched me into the world of imports. I'd gotten things
from the JEM catalog, but these acts made me aware of import only B-sides,
EPs, etc. I can't remember who was first in terms of my collecting, but both
"Start" b/w "So sad About Us" and the IM "Sanctuary" single strike a strong
chord.
