Lessee, Charity got me Oliver Trager's DIG INFINITY!: THE LIFE AND ART OF
LORD BUCKLEY for Christmas, and I've been savoring it. I also have three
posthumous collections of Robertson Davies' journalism, essays and speeches
that I'm reading in bits and pieces, and I've just finished the third of
Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicholson novels, which are highly recommended
even to those who aren't themselves teenage British girls. I find it
remarkable the extent to which she gets the emotional tenor of teenage life
*exactly right* while also being absolutely
fall-out-of-your-chair-piss-yourself-laughing funny. (The third of the
books is called KNOCKED OUT BY MY NUNGA-NUNGAS...which in France,
incidentally, is called ENTRE MES NUNGA-NUNGAS MON COEUR BALANCE...and it
follows ANGUS, THONGS AND FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING and ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, I'M
NOW THE GIRLFRIEND OF A SEX GOD and precedes DANCING IN MY NUDDY-PANTS,
which is due out in the US next month.)
But mostly lately, I've been reading magazines. I discovered when I was
cleaning out my nightstand last week that I had something like three
months' worth of untouched MOJOs from the period when I was moving to
Boston, settling in Boston, and then pissing off to Canada for our
honeymoon, which had been buried by the ever-growing to-read pile. This is
like finding a cache of unopened Christmas presents in May.
