1) The Beatles. Their music was not allowed in our house when I was young.
I had five older sisters, two of whom were infected with rabid cases of
Beatlemania, surely the cause of the banishment from Casa Field, so the
Beatles became my first (and really only) bit of music rebellion.

2) Paul Revere & the Raiders. I got a lot of my taste in music from my
sisters---and Raiders' records were played loud and proud whenever the
folks weren't around.

3) Moody Blues. Among the first purchases I made for myself when I was 13
or 14, I think the Moodies led me in the direction of prog-rockers,
especially Genesis and Yes. Justin Hayward has also written some great
pop---particularly early in the Moodies' catalogue.

4) Beach Boys. I remember having the "Sloop John B"/"You're So Good to Me"
45---my brother and I played the heck out of that one. I never much dug the
hot-rod BB songs, but always gravitated toward Brian's brainier
stuff----Pet Sounds, notably.

5) AM radio in the SF Bay Area---KFRC, KYA for Top 40, KDIA for Soul/Top
40, KNBR for the Bacharach side of pop, KSFO for Giants' baseball. By the
way, Border's has a new-ish Bacharach Best-of for $8.99---and none of the
songs are sung by Burt! Great stuff!

Hard to leave off Elton John, Badfinger and others---but I kept it to five!
