I could never pick one act as a single favorite, but Fountains of Wayne
would be in the running for me, too.

"Cloying?" No way. Even their most romantic songs (such as "Troubled Times")
retain a real-world edge, and their most snide ones ( see "Prom Theme") have
an underlying heart.

"Contrived?" Compared to which other popmeisters? I suppose I could do
without FoW's use of that I'm-singing-through-the-telephone filter or
whatever the hell that effect is called, but I don't like it when ANYONE
does that. I find their arrangements to be just rich enough to serve the
song. Nothing too dressy, nothing too spare. And smart! And variegated! Love
'em, love 'em, love 'em.

psycho-killer song ever?)
