1) OK, not a band, but I have to echo Stewart's sentiments. Number one for
me is clearly the AM radio stations. We had an old radio in our basement
that my sister and I would listen to for hours on end. I too have some
gratitude for the early music we shared. Also, the 45's we later bought. I
have no doubt this is where my early tastes in music were cemented. My
tastes have been influenced and changed over the years but I truly feel the
core of my tastes formed listening to that shitty old radio. : )
2) The Beatles. Surprise!
3) High School years: Bowie. I don't love Bowie as much as I used to. He
clearly did influence my tastes and broadened my scope in music. Some discs
still sound great to me "Hunky Dory", "Ziggy Stardust", "Low", "Heroes" and
a few more. His influence may still have some life via my now fanatical
love of Scott Walker's music. Very honorable mentions for this era: Sparks,
Queen (big influence, but honestly I don't listen to them much anymore), and
10cc.
4) College Years: Costello/Buzzcocks/Television/early Talking Heads. I
can't distinguish one of these at all from the other in terms of which was
more important to me. Loved them all. I remember hearing Talking Heads "More
Song's About Building and Food" while I was in a used clothing store. All I
knew was I had not heard anything like it, I loved it and owned it about 10
minutes later.
5) The Shoes. I had heard of The Shoes long ago but sadly, never actually
picked up anything by them. I relearned of them via Goldmine's Power Pop
issue years ago, via a guy named John Borack, I believe. : ) Getting into
them, opened the flood gates for me to wide range of music via this list.
Best,
Steve D
