My all time faves (T. Rundgren, N. Finn) came onto my radar screen in
mid 70s and early 80s, respectively, as did D. McManus in the mid 70s,
and I was born in '53, so I can't use these as "early". So here goes:
1. Chad and Jeremy. First single I ever bought: A Summer Song b/w
Willow Weep For Me.
2. Beatles, natch. First album I ever bought, well, let's just say it
was $3.98 (mono) at Wallach's Music City and I went home and immediately
steamed the cover off to get to the boys in the meat locker...
3. Pete Seeger. My first passion, real passion, gotta read and hear
everything I can kind of passion, was for bluegrass, coupled with left
wing politics, so Pete meant a lot to me.
4. Buffalo Springfield (nudging out Love and the Byrds). My 15-yr-old
hippy awakening came here in LA just as the aforementioned were defining
a music scene in my backyard (figuratively)
5. Neil Young. Okay, that's sorta cheating, but seeing him live,
alone, acoustic my freshman year at UCLA absolutely changed my life.
