What a great thread. My top five early/enduring musical influences would
be, in chronological order -- because ranking them by importance is an
impossible task:
1) The Archies (it's a little embarrassing, maybe, but I fear the extent
of their influence on me cannot be overstated)
2) Elvis Costello
3) Squeeze
4) XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear
5) Michael Penn
(...and as a sneaky sixth item, two more recent but no less influential
favorites: Francine and Mike Viola & the Candy Butchers. I'll buy anything
they put out.)
