I just got an advance of the upcoming CD by Rooney, one of the most
buzzed-about young bands in L.A. The band is led by Robert Carmine (nee
Schwartzman-he's the brother of Jason Schwartzman, actor and drummer for
Phantom Planet) and I've got to tell ya: the first two songs on the album,
"Blue Side" and "Stay Away" are the absolute shit, with a lot of guts, tight
harmonies and simply amazing hooks! The rest of the album doesn't quite
measure up to that standard (that would be tough), though some of the songs
are real good. One of the songs is called "Popstars," and in fact the band
refers to their music as "pop-rock". It's a good sign...

Rooney has just started a tour with The Donnas and OK Go. The dates are on
their site at http://rooney-band.com/rooney.html There are also some sound
clips on the site, though unfortunately they didn't choose to put up their
best songs (though perhaps the band's opinion differs from mine). :-)

The album is on Geffen, and is scheduled for release in May. I know the
guys are really young (I think everyone in the band is 20 or younger), which
is obviously a major factor in Geffen's decision to sign them, but if labels
are attracted to music like this there is real hope for pop.
