Kerry Chicoine said RE the Enz:
<<<When young Neil joined the fray, the pop quotient was upped considerably,

although I feel that Neil was really just
getting his songwriting sea legs under him during his tenure with the Enz
(some of the early Neil Enz tunes sound like a writer learning his craft, to
me anyway). Not to worry, for soon after he fully blossomed (like fields of
poppy and lavender) into one of my favorite pop songwriters with the string
of four magnificent Crowded House albums.>>

I agree, I think Neil's Enz songs were building blocks stacking up to the
brilliant Crowded House albums. Although I do love "message to my girl".

And i definitely prefer CH to Enz. but ironically Woodface is my favorite
CH album, and I think the songwriting and performance collaboration with bro
Tim is one of the things that makes it so great. What fantastic pop
melodies - and those lovely harmonies! When I saw CH touring Woodface, with
Tim as part of the band, the show really highlighted the magic of them
together. had a sort of Paul/John or Ray/Dave thing going - 2 different
voices that create something special together.

i like the neil finn solo cds, tho can't say i love em anywhere nears the CH
catalog. as for the tim finn solo cds, only have/heard 2 of them - of the
2, i really like Before and After, maybe even more than the Neil solo
output. although it's the tim/neil collaborations on B+A that i like the
best. (one of these songs i just love but i can't for the life of me
remember the title!)

so i could almost say that neil and tim are better together than alone (or
together alone) -- but not always. case in point, i just don't get into the
finn bros cd that much. it feels like a slapdash "just for fun" kind of
thing, no real songcraft.

still, i keep going back to all things finn, to at least road test them.
some i love, some i just like, but very few clunkers. (except maybe ALT?)
