My first loved band was the Monkees due to the
exposure they got on Saturday morning TV. Then it was
The Partridge Family. My first album ever was their
greatest hits. My early exposure to music was WLS (Oh
the days of AM radio). I remember when "Hey Jude" was
played ever other song. I have always claimed The
Beatles and The Monkees as my favourite bands. In 1975
I got my first Beatles album and was considered uncool
(I was in 5th grade then) because they were deemed
old. The Knack was the first non-Beatle product (with
the exception of The Partridge Family and a Bill Cosby
album) that I bought. In the 80's I was into bands
like Scorpions, Ratt, Dokken, and etc. It wasn't until
I heard REM and The Smithreens that I realised there
was an alternative scene. But I always felt sort of a
loner. A friend had an ep by The SPongetones and
introduced me to The Long Ryders. But I always longed
for new music by bands that had that 60/70's vitality.
I was liberated when I met Jeremy and found this whole
power pop thing going on. I am not alone. There are
others of you out there.
So after all this boring reading my conclusion is that
my taste haven't narrowed really. I don't mind
listening to Creed or Nickelback. AT least they have
cool guitars and some sort of melody. But my heart has
been and probably will remain in melodic, guitar
driven, power pop. So I guess I have always been a bit
narrow minded.
