I really love Phil Judd-era Split Enz (1975-1977); Tim Finn's weird-n-wacky
vocals complemented those dark, moody and decidedly progressive songs to a
"T". After Tim Finn assumed primary control of the reins (following the
departure of Judd), Split Enz released a string of rather unremarkable
albums, IMO; I've never really found anything I could really sink my teeth
into other than Tim's gorgeous "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" (arguably his
finest moment of that era). These albums are just too quirky in that
early-XTC way; not my bag, baby. When young Neil joined the fray, the pop
quotient was upped considerably, although I feel that Neil was really just
getting his songwriting sea legs under him during his tenure with the Enz
(some of the early Neil Enz tunes sound like a writer learning his craft, to
me anyway). Not to worry, for soon after he fully blossomed (like fields of
poppy and lavender) into one of my favorite pop songwriters with the string
of four magnificent Crowded House albums.

And my point is?

"Death...is...just another...appointment...to...keep."
