For what it's worth, I've observed that certain bands--and I think the Rosenbergs fit *squarely* into this category--don't get as much respect amongst the Audities audience because they don't have a real link to classic, '70s AM radio-style power-pop. The modern stuff--which could be extended to include Ben Kweller, The Stereo, OKGo, even Fountains of Wayne--is certainly big with some of us, but not all of us. And of course that's cool, too, because everyone has their own tastes and that's great. The thing is that it's this stuff that has a chance at making the mainstream. It's rooted in the here-and-now, rather than 30 years ago, and I guess that's why there's some animosity surrounding the Rosenbergs a bit. Some people claim they're merely "okay" and can't get behind them, while they might love a somewhat more classicist band like, I dunno, the Lackloves. Again, it's fine, but the division of us "scenesters" is probably why we can never propel a power-pop band beyond our own little cult anymore.
I guess that's why some of the bands who really make it--the Fountains of Waynes and OKGOs--make it without really being linked closely to the pop underground. Realistically a lot of our tastes are just truly quite different. --J
