Gary said.... As much as I hate participating in another "bands you like
suck" thread,
I'm intrigued by the possibility that either a universally loved or hated
group exists.

Hi Gary,
We may be in an "army of two" but since I asked, I'll respond. I agree on
the futility of arguing of "how can you think the band I love
sucks"...really that's my point of what I was musing about. We are "known"
to be so collectively similar in taste by the very nature of this group.
But I'm guessing were also as diverse. I know this has been talked about in
great detail previously so I won't belabor this...

Gary continued. Since we're limiting the question to the CURRENT scene (and
therefore
excluding The Beatles, Jellyfish, etc.), let me nominate a few current
artists and see if anybody will dare to knock them out of the
"universally loved" category. In NO particular order:

<snip>
Of your list, I "like" the following but don't LOVE them...(*) (please don't
send me any letter bombs)
Matthew Sweet, Owsley ,"Teenage Fanclub

Others that I'm CERTAIN others don't love.
Myracle Brah, Sloan
Anyone ready to whittle the list down more?

Squeeze
XTC
Splitsville
The Merrymakers
 Cherry Twister
Aimee Mann
 The Vandalias
The Shazam

Gary continues..

As for the "universally disliked" class, Pearl Jam is disqualified for
appearing on the Audities Best of the 90s list. I'm probably wrong, but
I don't know that anybody here would admit to liking these:

Michael Bolton
Mariah Carey
Celine Dion (oh PLEASE let it be her!)
Whitney Houston

Well, I despise these four. However, "admit" may be the key word.
Anyone? Be brave...(If anyone wants to let me know off line, that would be
cool. Just testing a theory).
I was serious that I do love Leo Sayer's first two albums. I know this
is that whole "guilty pleasures" theme and don't need to reawaken that
thread either. Why feel so guilty about it right?! I said, RIGHT????
: )
I had once tried to puzzle a game together for the list (I know I must have
"way to much free time on my hands"). Kind of like: I ante up "I like Leo
Sayer and I'll raise you a Celene Dion". The raise would be a call for
someone to acknowledge they listen to Celene Dion and then try to "raise"
the anti to see if the list could be stumped. For example: "I like Celene
Dion and I'll raise you a Dave Mathews". I just have an odd curiosity of is
there a universally hated person for people on this list. Perhaps there are
hundreds but I wonder....Plus, mainly, I thought it be kind of fun...
The problem with the "game" idea is you'd need everyone to play and that's
highly unlikely to really reflect everyone's hidden loves. I mean if we
poll everyone on how many men wear woman's underwear, we might not get a
response. That doesn't mean it's not happening! ; )

Ramble done, Steve
(Not quite: I bought Kweller's disc to lay the "ground work" for the show on
Tuesday. It's very good. He does have a Rundgren voice! His show sold out
on Wednesday (2000 seating capacity) and another has been added. I'm happy
to see Brendan Benson is getting this large of an audience that actually
might "get" his music. Last time I saw him he played in front of 40-50
people.
