Not sure what you mean by your 'audacity' comment. I was just pointing out
that you were accusing some writer of saying nice things here and not saying
nice things on another forum. In other words, you were calling some writer
on this list a hypocrite, but didn't name him. It certainly wasn't clear
from your prior post who you were referring to, and I think that's unfair to
the many writers who post here, as it is possible someone could have read
your post and speculated as to who the target of your post was.
Then you make your comment about how you actually *like* bands on this list.
I have no clue what you're referring to there either. If your implying
that I don't *like* bands on discussed on this list, that point is
demonstratively laughable. However, that's probably not what you meant.
Finally, I'm going to have to presume that the writer you are referring to
in your last paragraph is John Borack. And if so, your point is what
exactly? That because he has given a positive review of something, he has
to like or repsect a band? Or that, contrary to his review in Goldmine,
he's trashed the band somewhere else? Y'know, that would be shocking to me,
because: 1) if he did make these views in a public forum, I'm sure we would
have heard about it long before then, and, 2) knowing John and his
opinionated nature, he's not one to be wishy-washy.
Back to the first question -- I don't think John was showing any lack of
respect. I know exactly where he is coming from. I've written positive
reviews of Chewy Marble and Gigolo Aunts (the latter will be up on the next
Fufkin page). But I'd be much more bummed if the former split up than the
latter. Part of that would be because I know Brian K., and he's a great
dude. Yet the main reason would be that Chewy Marble's music is just more
special to me -- it fulfills pop needs that wouldn't get fulfilled
otherwise, while there are other bands who do for me what the Aunts do at
their best. Heck, Ed James's music doesn't thrill me anywhere near the
extent it clearly did for the many folks who voted for him in the Audities
poll -- in my upcoming review, I think I do a good job explaining my
perception of his strengths and weaknesses, so that others may make up their
own minds as whether the James record deserves a place in the ol'
collection. Is this a lack of respect or admiration? Even though the
record is pretty borderline for me, I actually have a lot of respect and
admiration for James, because of his strengths and the fact that he puts
himself on the line and makes a record representative of his tastes and
talents.
The point being (yeah, there's a point) that I don't think there really
should be that much read into Borack's comments.
(yes, a lot of words to make a point...)
